North America’s Railroads Run on X12

The North American railroad industry relies on X12 transactions, exchanging millions of messages each day over Railinc's EDI network. These exchanges include many different types of messages such as requests, responses, waybills, and several others. The 9 million messages delivered each day and the related tracing services help shippers and receivers identify important information about rail cars and their shipments across the rail network. As a point of reference, each day, railroads deliver an average of 5 million tons of goods, serving almost every industrial, wholesale, retail and resource-based sector of the US economy and accounting for more intercity freight volume than any other mode of transportation.

It’s not a stretch to recognize that X12 transactions have enabled the management, movement and exchange of goods in the railroad industry consistently for decades and that adds up to a lot of livelong days.
