X12 Summer 2025 Standing Meeting Recap and Summary
X12 recently wrapped up its Summer Standing Meeting activities. As usual, great collaboration was the order of the day, with many viewpoints openly shared, thoughtfully considered, and addressed. Our revision discussions centered on X12’s current transaction sets, developing new transactions, and providing supporting information and instructions to trading partners and other stakeholders. X12’s leaders also focused on strategic discussions related to upcoming initiatives and opportunities.
We at X12 extend our deepest thanks to the organizations that support the important work of the X12 committees and subcommittees by contributing employee time and expertise to ensure X12’s standards, implementation guides, and other technical instructions are effective, efficient, and trusted.

Maintenance Request Activities Update
X12’s subject matter experts work diligently between and during standing meetings to ensure that our products evolve to meet emerging business needs, while continuing to support the billions of mature, reliable, and trusted electronic exchanges processed using X12’s EDI standards annually.
During the meeting, X12’s subcommittees addressed a wide variety of maintenance requests, including:
- Medicaid 3rd party liability
- Supporting identification of multiple coverages from the same payer,
- Supporting identification of preferred pharmacy locations,
- Adding policy update information to property and casualty messages,
- Enhancing error reporting, and
- Updating syntax rules governing specific data elements and revisions to enhance consistency between and within transaction sets
X12 groups also worked on responses to questions related to implementation of X12’s EDI Standards. These questions, known as Requests for Interpretation (RFIs), and the corresponding answers assist implementers and inform revisions to later versions of the EDI Standard. X12 groups also reviewed work-in-progress to ensure technical accuracy, reviewed and revised policies defining due process requirements, and reviewed due process related to revisions scheduled for the next annual release.
X12N Group Updates
X12N’s task and work groups contributed to the following efforts:
- Enhancing and creating examples that trading partners use when implementing new electronic messages or updating existing ones
- Informational presentations that explain the group’s purpose, the work products it maintains, and summaries of revisions applied in various versions of the EDI Standard; these presentations will be available in X12’s Info Center soon
New Pre-Process Launch
X12 is preparing to roll out a new pre-process that will allow members and non-members alike to provide feedback on maintenance requests that may be applied to a future version of the X12 EDI Standard and associated implementation guides.
X12 conducted an informational forum at the standing meeting to gather input on the instructions and response options that will yield the clearest and must useful feedback. At the onset of the exercise, X12 member representatives were presented with a business case for an actual maintenance request and asked to respond as if they were proving feedback on the proposed functionality.
Participants also provided input on how frequently X12 should release a set of suggestions for feedback and how the review period should be structured. A robust Q&A session followed the written feedback collection. There is no doubt the rollout of the pre-process will be much smoother based on the information collected and the discussion.
Use Case Testing
X12’s use case testing pilot aims to ensure revisions to the HIPAA-mandated health care standards are technically accurate and enable new functionality−without unintended negative impact to the proven, mature functions that continue to grow and evolve.
X12 is grateful for the member organizations and licensing partners who are investing time and effort to ensure future implementations are smooth and efficient. After focusing on claim and remittance functionality in Phase 1 of the pilot, the group is pivoting to test the functionality of the healthcare eligibility benefit request and response transactions.
Donna Campbell, long-time co-chair of X12N’s Benefit Information work group and a nationally recognized expert in health care eligibility, presented a detailed explanation of the enhanced features and functionality in the 008060 version of the 270/271 transaction sets and implementation guide. The pilot group meets regularly and will host an informational forum on Sunday afternoon of the next standing meeting to announce updates on the testing conducted and findings documented to date.
Looking ahead: X12 Fall Standing Meeting
