Clarification is needed for Loop 2400 segment SV205. The 837I Implementation Guide says "The maximum length for this field is 8 digits excluding the decimal. When a decimal is used, the maximum number of digits allowed to the right of the decimal is three." Per the payer, in Loop 2400, segment SV205 they do not except anything over 6 digits without a decimal ( Must be less than or equal to 999,999.9). Is the payer being compliant?
The 837I TR3 limits the total number of digits in the 2400 SV205 to eight and the number of digits to the right of the decimal place to three. The TR3 is silent in regards to the number of digits to the left of the decimal. For this reason the TR3 would allow for more than six digits to the left of the decimal point as long as the total number of digits is less than eight.
As with all transactions, the compliant content is expected to accurately report the business situation. SV205 is defined as the service unit count. Sending more than 6 digits to the left of the decimal point would be billing for more than one million units within a single service line.
Providers submit bills at periodic intervals to avoid the need of submitting million unit amount on a single line item.
