276 5010 REF*LU segment
Description

The HIPAA TR3 for 276 5010 states the following for the APPLICATION OR LOCATION SYSTEM ID NUMBER [ 2200D-REF*LU/2200E-REF*LU], "...This identifier will be provided to the Information Receiver by the Information Source through a companion document or other trading partner document...".
Can you clarify what the data contained in the REF02 represent?
Is there any direct correlation to an 837 claim data element?
Do we have to wait for each payer's companion documents to know how to define the usage of this data element, as the TR3 Note states?

RFI Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in the 005010X212. The value in REF02 is an identifier derived and provided by the Information Source for the purpose of routing claim status requests to the appropriate system. Some payers who have multiple internal systems need an identifier to help with the routing of claim status inquiries.
There is no direct correlation between an 837 claim data element and this system identifier. As indicated in the TR3 Note, if the Information Source requires this identifier, it will be provided to the Information Receiver by the Information Source through a companion document or other trading partner document
