CTX "Business Unit ID" in 999
Description

We seeking a guidance on proper 999 creation in the following case. Incoming 270 transaction has a problem with Subscriber Trace Number, 2000C\TRN02. This transactions is acknowledged back with 999, version 005010X231A1. Since the error occurs within a business unit (Subscriber = Patient), segment CTX “Business Unit Identifier” is expected to be created with value of Subscriber Trace Number. But since trace number has a problem, proper CTX cannot be created as it would create 999 transaction with invalid syntax (which should not be done). So what is the recommendation in this case? Simply omitting CTX segment in such case or something else?

RFI Response

The CTX01 element of the Business Unit Identifier of the 005010X231A1 version of the 999 Transaction Set used for Healthcare business is a compound element.  When the 999 is used to respond to a Functional Group containing 270 transactions, the CTX01 would contain two values, the first to identify the Business Unit and the second to identify the value of the Business Unit.  The Business Unit of the 270 Transaction Set is “TRN02”.  The second value is to be a copy of the value in the TRN02 of the 2000C Loop.  The CTX01-2 is a String and has length constraints of a minimum of 1 character and a maximum of 35 characters.

RFI Recommendation

The length of the TRN02 in the 270 Transaction is greater than 35 characters:
In the event that the value in the TRN02 of the 270 Transaction contains a String (characters within the basic or extended character sets) but contains more than 35 characters, the submitter of the 999 should truncate the value from the TRN02 of the 270 Transaction such that the first 35 characters are copied into the CTX01-2 of the 999.
The length of the TRN02 in the 270 Transaction is compliant and one or more of the characters is invalid:
In the event the value in the TRN02 of the 270 Transaction contains invalid characters, not within the basic or extended character set and is 35 characters in length or shorter, the submitter of the 999 should fill the CTX01-2 with thirty five (35) nines (9), and enter in the IK404, “Invalid Characters”.
The length of the TRN02 in the 270 Transaction exceeds 35 characters and one of the first 35 characters is invalid:
In the event that the original value in the TRN02 was truncated to 355 characters and those 35 characters contains in invalid character, not within the basic or extended character set, the submitter of the 999 should fill the CTX01-2 with thirty five (35) nines (9), and enter in the IK404 “Invalid Characters”.
No data exists in the TRN02 or the 270 Transaction:
In the event that the value in the TRN02 of the 270 Transaction contains no characters, the submitter of the 999 should fill the CTX01-2 with thirty five (35) nines (9), and enter in the IK404 “No Data”.
