Property and Casualty CARC Code Clarification
Description

If a CARC code states “To be used for Property and Casualty only,” is it valid for the umbrella lines of business, such as Auto and Work Comp, as well? Or is it strictly limited to the Property and Casualty line of business?

Scenario

If an 835 is created for a work comp claim, is CO*P24 valid?

P24 (Payment adjusted based on Preferred Provider Organization [PPO]. Usage: …To be used for Property and Casualty only. Use only with Group Code CO.)

RFI Response

When there is a usage note associated with a CARC code that states, “To be used for Property and Casualty only,” any Property and Casualty line of business may use the code. For example, home, auto, worker’s compensation.

If the usage note is for a specific Property and Casualty line of business, the code may only be used by the line of business listed in the restriction. Example “To be used for Workers’ Compensation only” or “To be used for Property and Casualty Auto only.”
