HIR #638 specifically provides a standard solution to reporting tooth number and oral cavity information in the 4010A1 version of the 837P. The need still exists but I don't see anything in the 5010 version or a more recent HIR to accommodate these values.

Yes, the following work around is to be used for versions 4010A1 and 5010.
Tooth information would be sent with a single 'JP' prefix and one or more tooth codes from the Universal/National System (code source 135). Multiple teeth would be separated by spaces as follows:
K3*JP 1 16 17 32~
Oral cavity information would be sent with a single 'JO' prefix and one or more codes from the ISO 3950 Dentistry Designation System for Tooth and Areas of the Oral Cavity System (code source 135). Multiple codes would be separated by spaces as follows:
K3*JO 10 40~
